Character Counter

What this tool does

Count characters, words, and lines, with a separate total that leaves spaces out. Use it when a form, a social post, or a meta description has a character cap. One emoji counts as one character, and this page does not split the text into sentences the way the word counter does.

How to use

1. Type or paste text in the box.
2. Character, word and line counts update immediately.
3. Copy the character count or clear the box when you are done.

Examples

• Emoji and letters

  “A😀” is 2 characters: one letter and one emoji.

• Lines

  A line break starts a new line. An empty box is 0 lines.

How it works

Characters are counted as Unicode code points. Spaces are included in the main character count and excluded in the “without spaces” count. Lines follow the line breaks in the box, including a trailing blank line.

Limitations

A character is one Unicode code point, so a single emoji counts as one even if it is drawn from several symbols. Spaces stay in the main total and drop out of the without-spaces total. Sentence boundaries are not detected here.

Is the Character Counter free?

Yes. You can count characters, words, and lines as you type without paying or creating an account.

Does this leave my computer?

No. The text stays in your browser and is not sent to a server.

Is my input sent to a server?

No. The counts are produced in this tab. Clearing the box removes the text from the page, and it is not written to local storage.

Do spaces count as characters?

Yes, in the main total. The counter also shows a second total without spaces, which some forms and assignments ask for.

How many characters is an emoji?

On this page a single emoji counts as one Unicode character. Some apps count certain emoji as two or more, so their limit can differ slightly.
