How to Add or Subtract Hours and Minutes
By Tools Star Hub Editorial Team · Published
To add or subtract hours and minutes, turn each side into minutes, combine them, then split the signed total back into hours and a remainder from 0 to 59. The Time Calculator does that duration arithmetic. It does not look up a clock, a date, or a time zone.
Minutes past 59 are easy to leave as 75 or 90 when a timesheet, a trip, or a recipe is the real question. Carrying those minutes by hand is where the leftover hour gets dropped. A total in minutes is the check: if the hours and the remainder do not multiply back to that total, the carry is wrong.
How to add or subtract hours and minutes
- Enter the starting hours and minutes. Both boxes need whole numbers from 0 through 100,000. A blank box, a decimal, and a negative number are rejected. You can type 90 in the minutes box. You do not have to convert it to 1 hour 30 minutes first.
- Enter the hours and minutes to add or subtract. Those two boxes use the same rules. Zero is allowed. A blank box is not.
- Choose Add or Subtract, then press Calculate. Add combines the two durations. Subtract takes the second duration away from the first. The page then shows hours, leftover minutes, and the signed total in minutes.
- Check the total minutes. Hours times 60, plus the leftover minutes, should equal the absolute total. A minus sign means the subtraction went below zero. The hours and minutes are still the size of that gap.
Example
2 hours 30 minutes plus 1 hour 45 minutes
The start is 150 minutes. The change is 105 minutes. The sum is 255 minutes, which is 4 hours 15 minutes.
1 hour minus 1 hour 30 minutes
60 minutes minus 90 minutes is −30 minutes. The page shows minus 0 hours 30 minutes.
Things to watch
This is not a clock
The boxes are lengths of time, not a time of day. 2 hours 30 minutes plus 1 hour 45 minutes is 4 hours 15 minutes of duration. It is not 4:15 on a clock, and it is not a time in another city.
What the page will not do
It will not convert time zones, and it will not count calendar days. Hours and minutes must each be a whole number from 0 through 100,000. Use the Date Difference Calculator when the question is days between two dates. Use the Time Zone Converter when the same instant has to be read in two zones.
FAQ
- How do I turn 90 minutes into hours before I add?
- You do not have to. Type 90 in the minutes box. The page carries 60 minutes into an hour and leaves the remainder.
- How can I tell the carry is right?
- Multiply the shown hours by 60 and add the leftover minutes. That number should match the total minutes. For 4 hours 15 minutes, 4 × 60 + 15 is 255.
- What does a minus result mean?
- Subtract removed more time than the start contained. Minus 0 hours 30 minutes is a 30 minute gap below zero, which is −30 minutes. The input boxes still reject a negative number.
- When is this the wrong tool?
- Use it for a block of hours and minutes. Use the Date Difference Calculator for calendar days, and the Time Zone Converter when you need the same moment in two zones.
To add or subtract a block of hours and minutes, use the Time Calculator. It runs in the browser and does not require an account.
