What this tool does

Simplify a width and height into a ratio, or calculate the missing side from a ratio and one known side.

How to use

  1. Choose simplify, find height, or find width.
  2. Enter the size or the ratio.
  3. Press Calculate.

Examples

  • 1920 by 1080

    1920 by 1080 simplifies to 16:9.

Main features

  • A simplified integer ratio.
  • Height from a ratio and a width.
  • Width from a ratio and a height.

How it works

Both sides are scaled to whole numbers and divided by their greatest common divisor. When one side is missing, it is the known side multiplied by the other ratio term and divided by the matching term. The page does not open or resize an image.

Tips

  • Use the same unit for width and height.
  • A ratio term must be greater than 0.

Limitations

Decimal sizes are reduced from a rounded scale, so the shown ratio can be an integer pair rather than the original decimals.

FAQ

How do you calculate an aspect ratio?
Divide the width and height by their greatest common divisor. 1920 by 1080 is 16:9.
How do you find the missing side?
Multiply the known side by the other ratio term and divide by the matching term. A 4:3 width of 800 has a height of 600.
Does this resize an image?
No. It only calculates the ratio or the missing side.
Can the sides be decimals?
Yes. They must be greater than 0. The ratio is reduced after the decimals are scaled to whole numbers.
What if a side is zero?
Zero and negative sizes are rejected.
Are these numbers sent to a server?
No. Width, height, and the ratio are calculated in this tab. They are not sent to a server.
