How to calculate square footage
By Tools Star Hub Editorial Team · Published
Multiply each room’s length by its width, then add the rooms. The totals are in square feet and square meters. A room measured in meters is converted with the factor 0.09290304 square meters per square foot.
The page measures rectangles. It does not measure a closet with a slanted wall or a triangle.
How to add room areas
- Enter length and width for each room. Choose feet or meters for that room.
- Leave an extra row blank if you are not using it. A blank row is skipped.
- Watch the sides. A side of 0 is allowed and adds 0 area. A negative side is rejected. A side over 1,000,000 meters is rejected.
- Read square feet and square meters. Square meters are square feet times 0.09290304, rounded to two decimals. The other direction divides by that factor.
Example
One room
A 10 by 10 foot room is 100 square feet, which is 9.29 square meters. A 10 by 10 meter room is 100 square meters, which is 1,076.39 square feet.
Two rooms, or a blank row
A 10 by 10 foot room plus a 2 by 5 foot room is 110 square feet. A blank second row next to the 10 by 10 room is skipped, and the total stays 100.
Things to watch
Length is not area
The Unit Converter changes a length, a weight, or a temperature. It does not multiply two sides into an area.
