How to Turn a Number into Words
By Tools Star Hub Editorial Team · Published
The page writes a whole number in English words, from zero through 999,999,999. It also reads a simple English phrase back into a number.
A check, a contract, or a caption sometimes needs the words beside the digits. The words follow the value after leading zeros are removed.
How to turn a number into words
- Enter a whole number, or enter words to parse. 0 is zero. A negative number is allowed and starts with minus. A decimal is rejected. An empty box is rejected.
- Stay inside the millions. 1,000,000,000 is rejected. The range is -999,999,999 through 999,999,999. Leading zeros are ignored, so 007 is seven.
- Read the other form. Tens use a hyphen, as in forty-two.
Example
Digits and a phrase
7 is seven. 42 is forty-two. 100 is one hundred. 1234 is one thousand two hundred thirty-four. 1000000 is one million. -7 is minus seven. The words one hundred twenty-three parse back to 123. The phrase not a number is rejected.
