How to Add Line Numbers
By Tools Star Hub Editorial Team · Published
A line number is a prefix on each line. The text of the line stays the same.
Numbered lines are easier to cite. The numbers are characters added to the text. They are not a separate gutter.
How to add line numbers
- Paste the text. An empty box is rejected.
- Set the starting number. 1 is the usual start. The starting number must be a whole number.
- Set the separator after the number. A period and a space is one choice. Sorting or replacing afterward will treat the numbers as part of each line.
Example
Three numbered lines
First line, Second line, and Third line, starting at 1 with the separator period-space, become 1. First line, then 2. Second line, then 3. Third line.
FAQ
- Do the numbers change the original words?
- No. They are added in front of each line.
- Can I start at a number other than 1?
- Yes. Set the starting number.
- Will a later sort ignore the numbers?
- No. The Line Sorter sees the numbers as part of the line. Use Find and Replace first if the numbers should come off.
