How many working days are left after holidays?
Subtracting the 12 observed dates from 261 weekdays gives 249 working days. Do private employers use the same holidays?
Not necessarily. Federal holidays apply to federal employees, and OPM's notes on observed dates are for most federal employees. Private employers and state governments set their own calendars, and many give fewer days off, for example not Columbus Day or Veterans Day.

How do I count working days in one month?

What about state and local holidays?
Many states add their own holidays, and some do not observe every federal one. State government offices, schools and courts follow state calendars, so check the official state list before counting.
Add each extra date to the excluded list. Because the calculator only removes the weekdays you type, it works with any mix of federal, state, company and personal days off.
Why does the count change from year to year?
The number of weekdays depends on which day the year starts and whether it is a leap year. A normal year has 52 weeks and one day, so it has 261 weekdays if that extra day is a weekday and 260 if it falls on a weekend. A leap year has two extra days, which gives 260, 261 or 262.
Holidays shift as well, because fixed-date holidays move to an observed weekday when they fall on a weekend. That is why 2027 gets an extra federal holiday date on December 31: New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday.
