What this tool does

Turn Unix seconds or milliseconds into a date, or turn a date and time back into a timestamp. Use it when a log stores an epoch number and you need the clock time, or the reverse. The unit you pick is the unit that is converted, and named cities belong on the Time Zone Converter.

How to use

  1. For timestamp → date, enter a Unix value and choose seconds or milliseconds. The tool does not guess the unit.
  2. Press Convert to see local time, UTC and ISO 8601. Use Current timestamp to fill in now.
  3. For date → timestamp, enter a date and time and choose browser local time or UTC.

Examples

  • Seconds

    1710000000 seconds is 2024-03-09T16:00:00.000Z.

  • Milliseconds

1710000000000 milliseconds is the same instant. Using the wrong unit produces a date centuries away.

How it works

A Unix timestamp counts time from 1 January 1970 00:00:00 UTC. Some systems store seconds; JavaScript Date uses milliseconds. This tool labels the unit you chose. If the number looks like the other unit, it warns you but still converts with your selection.

Limitations

The unit you select is the unit that is converted. Milliseconds typed in as seconds are not quietly corrected. A date the browser cannot represent is rejected. Named cities and a second time zone are a different tool.

FAQ

Is the Unix Timestamp Converter free?
Yes. Turning epoch seconds or milliseconds into a date, and a date back into a timestamp, is free, with no account.
Does this use my timezone?
The local readout uses this browser’s timezone. UTC and ISO 8601 are timezone-independent. Date → timestamp can be interpreted as local or UTC.
Is my input sent to a server?
No. The number or the date is converted in this tab. It is not posted anywhere and not saved in local storage.
What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp is the number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on January 1, 1970. Many systems store it in milliseconds instead, which is the same value times 1,000.
How can I tell if a timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?
Current timestamps in seconds have 10 digits, while timestamps in milliseconds have 13. Pick the matching unit before you convert.
